Morning Lovelies!!
Yesterday, I spend the better part of the morning volunteering at one of Boston's Homeless Shelters, Pine Street Inn. I am fortunate to work for a company that believes doing good, and giving back to our community are important. Rue La La works closely with the Pine Street Inn and we help out once a month by having some of our employees volunteer to help prep food for the morning. A group of 6 of us went yesterday, all of us being our first time volunteering there. It was really eye opening to see how much this facility does for the homeless. The amount of food they were prepping was ENDLESS. I spend the beginning of the morning making and wrapping sandwiches and then putting brown bag lunches together for their Street Outreach Program.( To learn more about this program please follow the link: http://www.pinestreetinn.org/programs_streetoutreach.php) For the last two hours or so the whole group of us spent time chopping celery to be used in meals for the shelter throughout the week. The celery was being prepped for soups and stews, salads and more. Each individual fruit or vegetable is chopped and put in separate enormous containers so they can pick and choose how to use the food. (To learn more about the shelter please follow the link: http://www.pinestreetinn.org/programs_shelter_services.php)
After we finished prepping the food we were given a tour around the facility. It provides beds to about 280 people per night, and they are normally always full. During the winter months in Boston they normally have a little bit of overflow. It's sad to think of how many homeless people there are, not only in Boston but around the US. Do your part and lend a helping hand whenever you have time! I promise you, it will be worth it!

ReplyDeleteIf you're heard of the movie "Being Flynn" with Robert DeNiro that just came out - it's based on a true story and The Pine Street in is the shelter where he worked and ran into his dad.
