Meet Oz

Meet Oz. He is a handsome 8 year old Pit Bull that has had a very rough life.  He was found in Arkansas two weeks ago with severe lacerations to his neck. Oz's entire neck bloody and terribly infected. Last Hope K9 Rescue knew we had to do something immediately.  Due to the funds we were able to raise overnight for this poor boy, we pulled him from the shelter and got him right into see a veterinarian. His neck was cleaned and bandaged repeatedly, and while the process was painful, all Oz did is give the entire staff kisses over and over again. After this was done, he had a full vet exam, showing that he is Heartworm positive in addition to having the tick borne illness ehrlichiosis, hookworms and intestinal parasites.  He was started on the med Doxycycline which is the first step in Heartworm treatment in  addition; it will help get treat ehrlichiosis.

Five days after Oz’s thorough examination and treatment, the owner called the shelter to ask if his dog was there and when he could pick him up. Animal control called Last Hope K9 Rescue asked us if we would like to press criminal charges against this man for animal cruelty and animal neglect. We thought it over, and want what is best for Oz, so agreed to press charges. We were able to get all the Vet records from when this man had Oz and of course it wasn’t good news.  He tested positive in 2006 for Heartworm and again in 2009. Since 2009, Oz has not seen a vet. That is three years that Oz has not been treated for Heartworm, flea and tick, gotten his vaccinations, or any treatment overall.

Unfortunately for us, the situation got even worse when the family fostering Oz found out they knew the man we were pressing charges against. Oz’s foster parents are both lawyers and we knew this was a conflict of interest for Oz so we removed him from their care and placed him back with the Veterinarian who has been helping Oz so much. The court date was set for November but because the foster family are both lawyers, they were able to get a judge to move the court date up to this upcoming Monday. Now Last Hope K9 Rescue is scrambling to make ends meet as we have hired a great lawyer referred by Humane Society who will represent us. The fees are high and we are asking for everyone’s help.

If you can donate in ANY way, Last Hope K9 Rescue in addition to Oz will be FURever Grateful. All we want is for Oz to be happy and healthy and loved and to never go back to the horrible situation he was in before. Can you help?
